Railway switch - functions, interfaces and extras
Rail switches come in managed and unmanaged (plug&play) versions and have from 5 to 16 Ethernet ports with M12 connectors, with speeds of 100 Mbps or 1000 Mbps. The housings of the best railway switches are made of metal and are IP67-rated (waterproof and dustproof).
Rail switches are often equipped with 100 Mbps or 1000 Mbps fibre optic ports. The fibre optic ports are built in at the manufacturing stage. In order to properly select the switch for fibre optics, special attention should be paid to the type of fibre optic connector grinding and the type of fibre optic (single-mode or multimode).
The rail switch will most often be equipped with a transportable, wide-range 12-48VDC power supply. An additional power supply advantage will be redundant power supply. Some industrial switches are also equipped with a relay to alert of a device failure.
